Broken Umbrella Challenge

Disassembled blue plastic toy telephone with wiring and internal components on a wooden table.

Join us to transform broken toys and household items into new inventions!

  • Every year, millions of broken toys and household items end up in the bin. But what if broken didn’t mean useless?

In the Broken Umbrella Challenge, children take apart broken toys and everyday items to design something completely new!

It’s a fun, hands-on way to explore the issue of waste and learn about circular design while discovering how we can all become climate problem solvers.

Get ready to explore, design, and invent!

  • Suitable for ages 5-12 and runs in libraries, schools, and community spaces across London.

Workshop content is targeted based on age group of children attending.

Meet Our Founder

I believe eco-education and science should be fun and accessible to everyone.

Dr Renee Tonkin, Founder & Chief Scientist

Renee is the founder and Chief Scientist of Science Owl, and she’s on a mission to make climate education fun, creative, and empowering for young people.

As a scientist with a passion for sustainability, Renee realised that much of the messaging around climate change was leaving children feeling worried rather than inspired. She created Science Owl to bring hope, curiosity, and hands-on learning into the conversation.

Renee believes that combining sustainability learning, STEM skills, and creativity is a powerful way to inspire children to imagine solutions and take positive action for the planet.

Through Science Owl’s workshops, science kits, and community projects, she’s helping the next generation see themselves not just as learners — but as inventors, problem-solvers, and change-makers.
